IP MAN 3 MOVIE
The movie sees the return of Donnie Yen (甄子丹) as legendary wing chun grandmaster Ip Man, who strives to protect his family from ruthless thugs living in late 1950’s Hong Kong. Tyson’s presence is almost as incongruous as ending this brawling trilogy with poignant domestic melodrama - punctuated, of course, by one last hand-to-hand duel.Pegasus Motion Picture’s highly-anticipated action film Ip Man 3 will be opening first in Hong Kong on December 24, just in time for the Christmas holidays. These include a long-haired, arm-tattooed Thai kickboxer and the face-tattooed American pugilist Mike Tyson as a businessman named Frank, who sprinkles his menacing English dialogue with Cantonese.

But director Winston Yip shows less concern for authenticity in Ip’s antagonists. Set in 1959, “Ip Man 3” credibly conjures the period with soundstage sets, rock-and-roll oldies and slicked-back hair. He’s played by Max Zhang, who portrayed the villain in “The Grandmaster,” director Wong Kar-wai’s much more lyrical 2013 account of Ip Man’s life. Ip is assisted by another dad, aspiring martial artist Cheung, who regularly switches between ally and rival here. This time, a developer’s thugs attempt to seize the wrong property: a school whose students just happen to include Ip’s young son. When not scuffling, Ip dotes on his family. Throughout this trilogy, Yen has played Ip as quiet, earnest and modest, whether battling the Japanese, the British or unscrupulous Hong Kong land barons. The rest of the carelessly plotted story consists mostly of setups for fight scenes, nicely staged in such distinctive locations as an elevator, an umbrella store and the hull of a partly built ship. Oft-fictionalized kung fu master Ip Man (1893-1972) was a real person, and two things “Ip Man 3” depicts actually occurred: Ip (Donnie Yen) meets his most famous student, future action-movie phenom Bruce Lee (Kwok-Kwan Chan), and later nurses his wife when she becomes seriously ill.
